There are some places you stumble upon that leave a mark forever. For our family, Mutee Head in Cape York became one of those unforgettable chapters.
Tucked away on the western side of the Cape York Peninsula, Mutee Head is a remote, north-facing camping spot and it completely stole our hearts. We discovered it during a two-week winter adventure through Cape York in 2023.
We camped for free, right by the beach and scored one of the only huts. With no facilities and only 4WD access, it’s not for the faint-hearted. But if you love being self-sufficient, disconnected from the noise, and fully immersed in nature, it’s heaven. Honestly? It was the best campsite we’ve ever experienced.
Every day felt like a dream. We spent hours fishing out at the Jardine River mouth, watching the kids chase crabs along the shore, and marvelling at starfish bigger than our hands. No reception. No rush. Just sun, salt, and space to slow down.
At night, we’d sit back and watch the sky explode into colours – purple, orange, deep ocean blues – with sunsets that honestly felt unreal. It’s hard to capture the feeling of being surrounded by that much beauty, but I did my best to freeze those moments through my lens.
One of the most surprising things we explored was the old RAAF radar station, tucked just inland. It added this layer of history to the already wild landscape. There’s something powerful about standing in a place that’s seen both the stillness of nature and the intensity of the past.
Trips like this are everything I love about travelling: being off-grid, making slow, intentional memories with our kids, and experiencing landscapes that haven’t been overly polished or crowded. My photography is a way of honouring that stillness, a way of saying this mattered.
I’m always drawn to places that feel untouched and raw. Mutee Head was exactly that. It let us reset, reconnect, and remember why we do what we do.
As I share photos from this trip, I’ve had people ask: Can I buy this print? And the answer is: yes! If you’ve ever been to Mutee Head, or explored Cape York and want a piece of that memory to live on your wall, unframed prints from this collection are available.
Whether it’s for your home, your office, or as a gift to someone who’s shared that wild adventure with you, these prints are a little reminder of just how breathtaking the world can be when we step off the beaten path.
